I use for miniatures Palo Blanco wood (ivorywood), the same wood dowels.
others are pine, but this does not serve to make many details.
In both cases, they are bought in carpentry, rods sticks used to dowels. of 4 or 5 mm diameter
and I use a cutter to carve.

Thank you for taking the time to reply....have you ever worked with hackberry?....I have recently come into a lot of it and it's very dense and I'm not sure what it would be good for

I never work with hackberry, but they read, used to carve.
I would use sharp tools.
By the disposition of their fibers.
with patience everything can be!
